When Football Season Brings More Than Just Football

When Football Season Brings More Than Just Football

“Oh no… is it really August already? Didn’t football season just end?”

If you’re a coach’s wife, you probably know that feeling all too well. For others, football season is exciting, full of energy and anticipation. But for us, it often brings a wave of anxiety and uncertainty.

Every season, so much is out of our hands. We depend on 18- to 22-year-olds to carry out what they’ve been coached to do on the field. And let’s be real—that alone is enough to keep you on edge. But when you add in the off-the-field choices they make, sometimes all you can do is look up and say, “God, what are we thinking?”

And that’s when He whispers back: Don’t think. Just follow.

If I sit and overthink, I might run the other way. But when I stop and look back, I realize I’ve been following Him for over 20 seasons. Trusting Him hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been worth it.

Like Job, I’ve had moments of questioning. Times when my husband gave everything, and the players didn’t perform. Times when he didn’t receive the promotion or recognition I felt he deserved. I’ve asked God, Why?

But then I come back to Job 13:15: “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” In other words: God, I may not understand, but I know You are good. And even when everything feels like it’s falling apart, I’ll trust that You are still working for good.

Today, our family stands in a place of peace. And that peace tells me we are in God’s will.

But maybe you’re walking through your own hard season right now. It may not be football—it may be sickness, loss, or uncertainty. Whatever it is, stand strong. The God of Job is the same God who sees you, carries you, and can do more than you can comprehend.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for bringing us into another season. We are grateful for safety, strength, and the chance to grow together as a team and as a family. Thank You for guiding us through the challenges and giving us moments of joy along the way.

Lord, I lift up every person walking through a difficult season right now—whether it’s in football, family, health, or life. Surround them with Your love. Cover them with Your peace that passes all understanding. Remind them that just as You were faithful to Job, You are faithful to us today.

Keep our hearts steady, our minds focused, and our spirits anchored in You. May this season—on and off the field—be used for Your glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
